Why Your Flooring Consultant Should Know Your Paint Colour

Most people walk into a flooring store thinking about flooring. Which makes total sense — it’s a flooring store, and they need flooring. But if your consultant is only asking you about what you plan on putting on the floor, they’re missing the bigger picture. And so are you.

At LINQ Flooring, our flooring consultations start with flooring, and usually end somewhere else entirely. Looking at cabinets, a paint sample, accent tile… and that’s not a random accident. It’s how we do things, and it’s why our clients leave with spaces that feel pulled together rather than rooms that simply have new floors in them.

And let’s be clear. It’s not about selling you MORE things. We want to make sure that whatever we send you home with, is going to feel amazing in the space you already have.

The Most Common Design Mistake Homeowners Make

It’s not a bad eye or a wrong choice. It’s making decisions without taking the full picture into consideration. Choosing tile without having the cabinet sample with you. Choosing flooring without having a sample of the wall colour handy. Picking out a countertop from a small sample that looked beautiful under the showroom lights, but reads completely differently at home.

Every element in a room is in conversation with every other element. The undertone in your hardwood flooring either works with your trim, or fights it. The grout colour you choose for your bathroom tile either makes the whole room feel intentional or forgettable. The way these elements work together matters, and it’s almost impossible to evaluate when you’re only looking at one thing at a time.

This is where most flooring stores unfortunately get it wrong. They’ll give you the flooring you’re looking for, but don’t ask the additional questions needed to ensure it’s the right product for your home.

What a LINQ Flooring Design Consultation Actually Looks Like

When you come into our showroom in Vernon, we want to know more than your square footage. We really take a design-first approach, so we want to know what your walls look like. What your kitchen cabinets are doing. Whether your home colour choices lean more warm, or cool toned. What you’ve committed to, and what is still up in the air.

We even keep Benjamin Moore paint swatches on hand, so we can hold your preferred hardwood flooring sample up to your actual wall colour and see what happens. We put tiles next to cabinet finishes. We pull countertop samples and see how your chosen hardware pops against the grains.

Then, we send you home with everything you need, including full-sized samples, so you can evaluate everything in your own lighting. Natural light in your kitchen at 7am will make your samples look completely different than how they looked in the showroom.

Why This Matters, Especially for Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is one of the most significant decisions you can make in your home renovation. It’s permanent in a way that paint and accessories aren’t. The species, the stain, the finish, the plank width: all of these live with your other design choices for years to come.

A warm honey oak reads completely differently against cool grey walls than it does a warm white trim. A wide-plank white oak in a matte finish creates a completely different feeling than the same wood in a satin finish. These distinctions are easier to navigate when you have someone in the room with you who has seen a lot of rooms, and who is paying attention to all of it, not just the product you came in asking about.

Our hardwood installer is one of the best in the Okanagan. But outstanding installation starts with outstanding selection. We don’t separate those two things, because ultimately both play a role in your end result.

The Same Logic Applies to Your Bathroom Renovation

We work with many Vernon, B.C. homeowners on their bathroom renovations. They are a big part of what we do here at LINQ! This is where the whole-picture approach matters most. A bathroom is a small space and every finish is visible from everywhere in the room. The floor tile, the wall tile, the grout, the vanity, the fixtures, the shower door — everything is visible in the same frame.

But not to worry, we’re here to help guide you through the full process, just like when you’re choosing flooring. We help you see how the tile you love on the floor works (or doesn’t) with the countertop you’re keeping. We coordinate those decisions before anything is ordered or installed, and we’ll help you source sinks, fixtures, shower seats, and glass shower doors. This way you find yourself with a bathroom that feels right and looks amazing, every morning when you step into it.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you come in! That’s what the consultation is for. But if you want to make the most of your visit , it helps to bring:

Photos of the space you’re working on (natural light photos are best)

  • A note on what’s staying — cabinets, countertops, trim, fixtures
  • Any paint colours you are committed to, or considering
  • A sense of the feeling you’re going for, even if you can only describe it in vague terms (we’re master de-coders 😉 )

Our expert team will take it from there. Come back as many times as you need to. There’s no pressure, and no rush. We understand that good decisions take the time they take, and we’d rather you feel right about than move fast about it.
